For the Robert Laffont imprint « the Freed », Nancy Huston writes a letter to a Swiss writer and prostitute whose life has been as rich as it has been unbelievable: Grisélidis Réal.
Brought up by an abusive mother in a rigid Calvinist household, the young Grisélidis seeks early on to leave her native background behind.
She encounters men, some of them dangerous, and gives birth, amidst multiple miscarriages, to four children she gives up for adoption. With two of them, she flees to Germany in company of a schizophrenic Afro-American who beats her and forces her into prostitution. The start of a new, hard but exciting chapter of her life: a new love, dope dealing and the pleasure of a life at the margin of society…until it all ends badly with her being incarcerated for several months, then thrown out of the country.
Writing literature and fighting for the rights of prostitutes will be the purposes which end up saving her life. Fascinated by this magnificent and courageous poet, albeit several differences, Nancy Huston finds a lot of her own existence reflected in this liberated, rebellious and touching figure. Their two writing styles seem to complement each other. Throughout the pages, in sudden revelations, Nancy Huston bares her soul like never before.
This letter resonating with admiration is a true testament to one of the great artists of the late 20th century whose modern way of thinking placed her at the avant-garde of contemporary debates about art.
A resolutely feminist text and a powerful exploration of the feminine body as a privileged connection to the world.
