After the success of The Léon Sadorski Affair (Prix Goncourt longlist 2016) and The Yellow Star of Inspector Sadorski (Priz Interallié longlist 2017) comes a new investigation from the sinister and fascinating French secret service inspector.

A young woman is suspiciously denounced by a police officer and arrested in a bistro in Paris’s 10th arrondissement. She was planning on crossing the Demarcation Line with false papers in order to transport precious metals. Léon Sadorski, the deputy inspector charged with the “Jewish Section” of the French secret services, sees the investigation as an opportunity to get rich. But he has other problems, especially protecting Julie, the Jewish teen who has been hiding at his place since the roundup at the Vélodrome d’Hiver and to whom he is vaguely attracted. More and more people become aware of his problem or are skeptical about it, including a troubling German SS officer who happens to be fanatical about exterminating the Jews. That’s when an anonymous, adulterous letter sends Sadorski on the set of Robert Bresson’s first film: among the young actresses of the drama set in a Dominican convent, the inspector will meet his “Angel of Sin” and turn into a criminal… All this in a city haunted by the anxiety of the attacks, the daily alarms and the Allied bombings devastating the nearby suburb, causing hundreds of casualties.
