Samy's World

Release date : 22/10/2020
Take a look the world through the eyes of those who are “different.” After her deeply moving book, The Toothbrush Thief, about her son Samy, Églantine Éméyé offers an enlightening work on tolerance.
Since The Toothbrush Thief, Samy has grown up. He is now 12 years old and lives in a special home for people with multiple disabilities. He is not capable of speaking. Mohammed is a 37-year-old refugee who has just come to France. He speaks, but only in his native language.... Since The Toothbrush Thief, Samy has grown up. He is now 12 years old and lives in a special home for people with multiple disabilities. He is not capable of speaking. Mohammed is a 37-year-old refugee who has just come to France. He speaks, but only in his native language. Here, no one understands him. One is joyful, full of humor, and finds something positive in every situation. The other is sad and somewhat lost. Between these two, who at first appear to have nothing in common, a true friendship blossoms. They speak to each other almost daily in their own way.
Each recounts his day-to-day life, echoing that of the other. Their stories intertwine, because while Samy has gone to live far away from his family, Mohammed has come to stay in his empty room. In this imaginary dialogue between her little boy and the refugee she welcomed into her home, Églantine Éméyé shows us another life through their eyes. A life we cannot imagine, the life of those labeled “different” or “other.” In turns funny and moving, the stories of these two people bring a breath of fresh air to our “normal” ones. From their perspective, a reverse mirror to our own, comes a world made of little joys and big victories over oneself in which, in the end, it’s better to live. A humanist story carried by a contagious joie de vivre despite all obstacles, just like that of its author and her tireless struggle of love.
