This melancholic, yet hilarious book follows an heir of old nobility who no longer knows which saint to pray to. His family played an important role under the Monarchy, but that no longer means anything. He feels like a ghost. A freelance journalist incapable of any sort of full-time career, he is in search of a good person to interview. Too phased to have any kind of political conviction, he isn’t a royalist, but doesn’t believe in the myth of a France born in the Revolution, either (all the Republican baggage, including Voltaire and Hugo, are just annoying). Then one day, he has a vision of Louis XVI! Finally, he will be able to bring to life this poetic, moving figure who’s been confined to France’s history as a clumsy oaf good for nothing but the guillotine. The narrator and the king meet up regularly to chat and even envisage the king’s return to the throne. Meanwhile, the narrator tries to reflect on French revolutions of the past and present, which have sunk deep into the country’s soul. What’s the point of it all? It turns out that our man will rediscovers his role as a father and decide to clear up a few family anecdotes and his vision of history by finding the spirit of the seventeenth century and its the “sweetness of life” that Talleyrand used to describe the salons of the final years of the Ancien Régime. When you no longer have a castle to pass on to your children, you can at least try to create happy memories for them
