The memoirs of a great journalist, a woman who was as free in life as in the way she practiced journalism, where she made her mark with her own unique style.
“I will be a journalist, the young provincial girl from Périgueux promised herself very early on in her life. Why that career choice? Out of a love of writing? To head off on special reports and recount the world? Nothing of the sort. No, just to be free. My thought... “I will be a journalist, the young provincial girl from Périgueux promised herself very early on in her life. Why that career choice? Out of a love of writing? To head off on special reports and recount the world? Nothing of the sort. No, just to be free. My thought process didn’t go any further than that.” After a happy childhood with a loving, protective family, Catherine Nay headed off to Paris and quickly fulfilled what every budding journalist in the sixties dreamed of: landing a job at L’Express, the best schooling in journalism there was at the time, under the leadership duo of Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber and Françoise Giroud. ”It was, in my eyes, the most modern, most attractive form of journalism.”

Catherine soon finds herself among equals, a sort of second family, in the company of Michèle Cotta—still one of her best friends—along with Claude Imbert and Georges Suffert. She shares their unparalleled journalistic effervescence. The figure of Françoise Giroud dominates these years, as Catherine reveals unexpected facets of her personality. Françoise serves as a model for Catherine, both an observer of the morals her time and as an independent woman of character.

Catherine Nay strictly obeyed this same desire to prioritize her personal choices and her professional life. She had neither a spouse nor children, only her passion for her career. However, this didn’t keep her from sharing her life with one of the greatest figures of France’s Fifth Republic, Albin Chalandon, from the moment they first met in 1968.

Nay was then charged with “following” the Gaullists for L’Express. She went behind the scenes of France’s political sphere, especially with the right, and now, through various vivid portraits, offers savory anecdotes, things seen and heard, judgements and observations. Her words are original and perceptive, often cruelly honest, but full of humor, intelligence, and vivacity, through the successive terms of Georges Pompidou, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, François Mitterrand, Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy. She delivers an intimate chronicle of this world of passions with clashing characters far outside the norms of what she was used to at L’Express, then at Europe 1, deciphering their deepest and darkest secrets. This seasoned investigator tells the universe of power like it really is, with its rituals, its customs, its major and minor rivalries, forming a comedy made of particular sensitivities that goes beyond ideas and convictions. Catherine Nay freely tells all without hiding her favorites or her biases.
