Scientific studies have confirmed the importance of nature for our physical and mental health and its discovered benefits on children’s ability to learn continue to multiply. In this book, Crystèle Ferjou, a longtime teacher and now educational advisor, describes the methods she used for teaching a class outside and the positive effect the experience had on children. Arguing that today’s inclusive and democratic school environment cloisters the child inside a building’s four walls, as well as within the intellectual and social norms that come along with it, Ferjou rethought the educational environment by relocating it part time in nature. Every Thursday for several years, she took her class into the forest, no matter the weather, and left it up to the children to choose what to do. Whether it was games, observations, or playing pretend, each child was led by his or her own direction and needs. As a result, they were more active and less stressed than in a traditional pedagogical environment. With the freedom of space, time, and choice of activity, the children became more imaginative, more curious about the world around them, and more sensitive to ecology through their contact with nature. And because the method favored their well-being within the class and their ability to feel part of the group, their potential for learning and creativity increased tenfold.
Simple and practically free, this method was supported by parents and loved by all the children Ferjou taught, including those who had had difficulties adapting to the traditional school environment in the past. Crystèle Ferjou’s method forms sensitive children and is attracting more and more teachers in France and beyond!
