Michel De Palma, known as the Baron, has hardly recovered from an injury sustained in the cave of Le Guen when a rich German woman retains his services to locate her husband, William Steinert, who disappeared a few days previously. Initially sceptical, the Baron starts to take an interest in the case when Steinert’s body is found in marshland and the police come to the hasty conclusion that he accidentally drowned. The pace of events picks up and the investigation takes a more sinister turn with the discovery of several savagely mutilated bodies whose limbs have been torn off.

Delving into the past, the Baron realises that these apparently unconnected murders are all linked to the Tarasque, the beast of the marshes and the legendary emblem of the region. The victims are linked by a common past and present - all are natives of the region and are former knights of the Tarasque.

Amidst all the folklore and the witness statements he gathers about the past, how is the Baron to establish the truth? And all the while, the unsolved murder of Isabelle Mercier, who bore a strange resemblance to the German widow, continues to haunt him.
