This is why Christian Liger has chosen the form of the novel to really recreate the essence of Caravaggio's life and time, while using a pointed and hastened style of writing reflecting Caravaggio's confusion, obsession and intensity. Caravaggio had no home, only short lived love affairs and never belonged to one country: he always was chased, from Milan to Rome, Naples, Malta, Syracuse, Messina. And eventually to the famous black beach, where the novel starts.
