There have been many biographies of Caravaggio. All of them have been criticised of not catching the spirit of Caravaggio`s life, a life so short and so little known. This is why Christian Liger has chosen the form of the novel to really recreate the essence of Caravaggio's life and time, while using a pointed and hastened style of writing reflecting Caravaggio's confusion, obsession and intensity. Caravaggio had no home, only short lived love affairs and never belonged to one country: he always was chased, from Milan to Rome, Naples, Malta, Syracuse, Messina. And eventually to the famous black beach, where the novel starts.
