The young man, destined to a well ordered life with sensible Béatrice and a career at the post office, dreams of becoming a journalist and leading a more adventurous life. Elvira is a pianist and leads her career as an artist enjoying complete freedom, and meeting her serves as a revelation for Pierre-Marie: in her presence, he finds he is able to accomplish his strongest desires.
