Chronicle of a village in the North of France, in the Douai region, at the end of the 1930s and the beginning of the Occupation, through the eyes of Marianne, eleven years old, the daughter of the village’s master brewer. The father is proud to say over and over that he is descended from a line of master brewers since the Revolution. Beer is at the very center of their lives. Their house is right next to the brewery, an imposing three-story building with a tall chimney. The little girl is affected by the close bond between her brother and her father, united by the same passion for their trade. Soon, Marianne finds herself even more alone when she loses her mother to tuberculosis. And the ever-increasing German threat forces her to leave with her older brother's wife to an unoccupied territory: the Bay of the Somme. Marie-Paul Armand's sensitivity shines through the pages, led by her simple, authentic, concise writing, as close as possible to a world that no longer exists and to the daily life of these "little people" from the North that she has been able to describe like no other.
