On 15 January 2011, the semi-naked body of a young women is found by walkers at the foot a cliff in the bay of Trévani in Mayotte. And so begins the Roukia affair. This 18-year-old was still at school but earnt money as a ‘soussou’, the local name for an occasional prostitute. Toxicology tests reveal that Roukia died of a heroin overdose, but where did the drug come from? Her boyfriend Mathias, a drug addict from mainland France with whom she spent her final evening, the lawyer and local elected official Mansour, and the investigating judge Hakim are all convinced that the white powder was put into circulation by the Groupe d'intervention régional to remunerate informers. Consisting of police officers and gendarmes, this unit is tasked with combating the parallel economy in this isolated land.

Shot through with acts of manipulation, treachery, violence and jealousy, this is the story of a lost young woman but also of the dark side of a picture-postcard island that has entered into the modern world too rapidly, still blighted by poverty, with closed but porous borders, and gradually sinking into chaos.
