He is a budding architect and she designs shoes for her father’s business, but just months after they are engaged, Raphaël is called up and their life is upended by the war. The Wehrmacht requisitions her parents’ vast estate and Ariane fears for her fiancé, who has joined the Resistance. In early 1944, Raphaël is arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Buchenwald, and with lead in her soul Ariane sleeps with a German captain in the home of saving her fiancé. Opprobrium ensues and she is forced to flee, but she manages to carve out a new life in Paris as a chambermaid in a small hotel in Montmartre. In her spare time, she develops her talent for painting with the help of one of the Sacré Coeur street artists, and then through another encounter new horizons open up as she enters the prestigious world of haute couture. But Ariane can never forget her parents, the traumas they have all suffered, or Raphaël…
