~Yvette Roudy, the face of strong and effective political feminism, is back after several years of hiatus, with a rebellious, committed text in the line of Stéphane Hessel’s The Power of Indignation.
~A leading light of feminism, Yvette Roudy was France’s first Minister of Women’s Rights. Her political fight at the heart of Mitterrand’s socialist government in 1981 to 1986 brought about pioneering laws on reimbursement for abortions and gender equality in the workplace, but also the institutionalization of Women’s Rights Day... ~A leading light of feminism, Yvette Roudy was France’s first Minister of Women’s Rights. Her political fight at the heart of Mitterrand’s socialist government in 1981 to 1986 brought about pioneering laws on reimbursement for abortions and gender equality in the workplace, but also the institutionalization of Women’s Rights Day in France on March 8. Yvette Roudy has continued this battle in the years since as a deputy in France’s National Assembly and a mayor, and published Just What Are They Afraid Of? as well as the “Manifesto of the 577” for gender equality.
Today, she is older, but has lost none of her vivacity, and is back with a politically committed text to bring back dynamism to a brand of feminism that is active, but in the minority. Rebellious and always ready to fight, in the spirit of Stéphane Hessel’s Power of Indignation, she speaks to all women, reminding them of how far they’ve come after all the years of masculine domination, but also pointing out what’s left to do in order to reach true gender equality. Marital rape, sexual harassment, sexist violence, advertising’s exploitation of the female body, salary inequality, non-respect of gender equality, prostitution—too many problems remain.
In the blazing context of #metoo, after a liberation too closely linked to la parole feminine, Yvette Roudy appears as an activist who is still full of conviction and spirit keen to continue with the next phase of the feminist fight, to raise up a new generation of women capable of facing these questions, as well as new challenges, like bioethics. And to remind us all that while women’s rights are still not fully achieved, it is not a losing battle!
