The Untraceable Island

Release date : 22/08/2019
Two years after the critically acclaimed The Rules at the Top (winner of the Prix des Hussards and long listed for the 2016 Prix de Renaudot), Jean Le Gall returns with a tale of revenge that also serves as an epic of the world of literature, mixing influences as diverse as Alexandre Dumas (The Count of Monte Cristo) and Roland Barthes.

A helicopter flies over an island in flames, like a Château d’If for a strange Edmond Dantès… On board, Jacques Lousteau, an insurance agent in charge of investigating the fate of a certain novelist named Olivier Ravanec. But who is Ravanec? And what tortuous destiny drove him to live as a recluse on this island of Vita Nova? In 1979, Olivier Ravanec, whose debut novel appeared without fanfare, starts a job as a journalist for Le Matin, a newspaper with shifting ideologies. He is also a ghostwriter for an old count who loves his blond coiff of hair. Crowned with these vestments, he will enter the literary world of the 1980s—a world that’s nocturnal, drunk, and already damned. He will soon lose himself in an ambition entirely lacking in both means and charm. His only notable book is born out of a deal with Jack Thieuloy, the dangerous eccentric of the 1970s literary scene, who offers Ravanec one of his manuscripts while pressing a gun into Ravanec’s calf. Zaid, a rich man who comes out from nowhere with all the glitter of show business, takes Ravanec under his wing. During a dinner with the in-crowd under the watchful eye of some old “neo-Hussard” writers, Olivier meets Dominique—a tenacious editor, and the missing piece in our love triangle. Olivier will stick to his cynical dilettantism. Zaid will be sent to prison. And Dominique, who was first seduced by Zaid, will become Oliver’s companion in a romance he wrote ahead of time. But then she will mysteriously disappear, leading Oliver be locked up in a château far from civilization. Did Zaid orchestrate this act of vengeance? Only an insurance agent seems to be able to remember the three of them.
