What really happened in Manilhac-le-Haut on that December night in 2019? After leaving a neighbour’s place on foot, Laurent Lerault never made it home.
Back in the early 2000s, he had been a fashionable painter until his wife died, whereupon he slid into alcohol and drug abuse and lost his artistic mojo. It was the discovery of this remote village, which he immediately fell in love with and where he bought a house, that got his life and his painting back on track, even though he always remained an outsider as far as the villagers were concerned.
His daughter Fanny, who works as a translator in the publishing world, soon discovers a hamlet in the midst of a vast expanse of fir trees: a little group of houses huddled around the ruins of a castle dating back to the Wars of Religion. And as she interacts with the inhabitants of these highlands and tries to get to the bottom of her father’s disappearance, she starts to get her own life back on track…
