The famed geneticist, Axel Kahn, revisits his reflections on ethics, but this time through the influence of his own life experiences.

“You know, Axel, a little boy can’t say that.” His father said this to him after he once made a racist comment. From that moment on, what he refers to as his own “moral edification” began. Kahn demonstrates the influence his family has on his character. Christianity also plays its part, as does Kahn’s involvement in the communist party. His work as an emergency room doctor and his military service in Africa also helped shaped his moral fiber.

As an intellect, he is fully aware of the responsibility he has in responding to the very diverse questions that worry our contemporaries: Should surrogate mothers be condemned? How can we fight against the “commercialization” of the human body? Should euthanasia be legalized?

In the name of “reflexivity” (do not do onto others as you would not want done onto you), Kahn’s creed does not change: “What will always matter to me is the importance of others, the fight for mankind’s progress in the face of its own stigmatization.”
