An unquestionned talent, Hélène Grimaud is today one of the most celebrated pianists, a master who brings to her playing a rare combination of strength and mythicism, poetry and drama, authority and inquisitiveness.Performing throughout Europe, the United States and Japan, critics say of her performance that « her heatr speaks acutely and specifically with every depression of her keys ». However, when she is not touring and performing, she is at home in New York State with her herd of wolves which are to be the subject of this book.Hélène was brought up in Aix en Provence. Her father of Italian origin and her mother of Corse origin, both worked at the University. Her childhood was unusual and as she says « I was never at ease with children of my own age, I was obsessed with symmetry and was easily agitated. Learning the piano came as a relief ».In 1991, she first encountered a wolf, socialised and tame, she felt an instant chemistry with the animal. Today she keeps a small herd of the species, her interest going from giving a few socialised wolves a good home to championing this unfairly demonised species. She is passionate about the wolves's rôle in the ecology of the wild, and the fact that the huge spaces they require correspond to the need for the preservation of undeveloped land in general. She is buying more land, improving her wolves' habitat, building a visitors center to accomodate school groups and other visitors. At night she closes herself in for intense work at the piano. Her two lives are separate, yet comprehensible aspects of a single passionate soul who now has not one universe, but two to fire her restless imagination. In her book, she will, for the first time, let us have an insight into the universe of her wolves.
