Since 6 a.m. February 24th 2022, we only see Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in camo pants, kaki t-shirts, kaki fleece sweaters and vests. Despite all assassination attempts by Russian operators, he remains in the “House of Chimaeras”, the presidential residence next to the administration building of Bankova Street in the heart of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. The fantastic decorum of this stunning Art Nouveau extravaganza has become somewhat surrealistic under present circumstances: the large windows are blocked out with sand bags, the bodyguards have switched their suits for Kevlar vests and a rugged looking President Zelenskyy, who promised to only shave fully after ending the war, addresses the whole world sitting on the stairs or leaning against the impressive stone pillars of the building. This is where the President of Ukraine, elected in 2019, has turned into a true commander in chief, a bona fide war hero incarnating the resilience and the courage of his whole people. In only a few minutes, this former comedian known for his short stature and quirky mimics has risen to the challenge, leading his young country, which broke free from Soviet rule only 30 years ago, into a fight to the death for its survival as a nation-state on the map of Europe.
Since February 24th, the man of 44 who used to make his 44 million countrymen laugh is playing a scene he did not shoot for his comedy series Servant of the People (Sluga naroda): the tragic, cynical and above all extremely cruel war scene imposed upon him by Vladimir Putin.
Before this fatal moment, Zelenskyy’s presidency after the beautiful 2019 election bore a strange resemblance to his fictional presidency on television, where he played the simple and idealistic history school teacher Vasily Goloborodko who becomes president of Ukraine by accident and takes on the corrupt system of the oligarchs. In his real life presidency, there had been already trying times with the oligarchs battling his reforms, Putin trying to capitalize on the young president’s ingenuity or Donald Trump attempting to blackmail him into helping with building a potential corruption case against Hunter Biden. Yet, when faced with the overwhelming challenge of the Russian invasion, Zelenskyy rose to the occasion and made his entry into the annals of World History.
What is the true face of this highly unusual president who had to shoulder an important part of Europe’s destiny? This book retraces the journey of the most unusual head of state in early 21th century Europe, a journey and a destiny in the making between comic relief and the most brutal of realities.
