The establishment started as a magasin de nouveautés, then evolved into a café-bar and literary café, finally becoming a café-restaurant with its own garden terrace and library.
Essential meeting point for authors and intellectuals from all walks of life since the end of 19th century, the café has had the privilege to welcome Verlaine and Apollinaire, Joyce and the surrealists and more recently, Camus, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Hemingway, as well as numerous artists who have developed a very close attachment to the quarter of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Picasso, Boris Vian, artists of the French New Wave and avant-gardists all frequented the terraces of this renowned café owned by the same family for four generations.
