A new take on the years 1789-1815, by one of the greatest living historians.
In a decade, Patrice Gueniffey has earned a reputation as a historian of international renown through the originality of his approach to the Terror and the First Empire. In the same vein as François Furet, he combines the quality and originality of his analysis with a rare mastery of style.
This work is a collection of twenty texts, some of them never before published. The whole is intended to present a truly readable volume, a work of continuity rather than simply a series of articles. It is divided into two parts:
- “Events and institutions” proposes, in particular, a new approach to the Robespierre moment, analysed as an ideocracy; it dissects the fiasco of the Directoire, and considers the Empire in its double dimension, interior and exterior.
- “Men and interpreters” offers a magnificent gallery of portraits, those of Robespierre, Lafayette and Napoleon particularly brilliant.
