This is the story of Ida Grinspan and her survival of Ausschwitz thanks to Wanda, a Polish nurse. Ida, French of Polish Jewish origin, is 14 years old when deported to Ausschwitz in 1944. She survives the camp during 17 months and one hard winter, but suffers from typhus and is brought to another camp in Neuestadt-Gleve. It is here that she meets Wanda who nurses and protects her and gets her back onto her feet. When released from the camp she gets separated from Wanda. She is alone, her parents have been killed. She wants to see Wanda again and thank her but her search takes her 50 years. In the meantime, Ida becomes a regular visitor to Ausschwitz where she talks to students and their teachers to help them to understand history and come to terms with it. Ida eventually finds Wanda, but it is unfortunately too late: Wanda has fallen into a coma and is not able to recognise Ida. Bertrand Poirot-Delpech has written up this moving story and invites the reader to join him in this search for Ida's saviour.
