Henriette Steinberg is the daughter of Eastern European Jews who survived the Holocaust. After the end of World War II, her parents become politically and socially active, fighting for the independence of former colonies, the liberation of political prisoners throughout the world and for a better life for the poorest in France. Following in her parents’ footsteps, Henriette Steinberg participates at her first fundraiser at the Gare Du Nord train station in Paris in 1963, at the tender age of 12.
Ten years later, she catches the attention of Julien Lauprêtre, President of France’s biggest charity Secours Populaire. At that time, she is already implicated in a large variety of charitable works all over the world, travelling from Franco’s Spain to Lebanon, Mexico, Japan and Indonesia where she helps victims of natural catastrophes, of wars and of poverty while working at the same time her regular job in France. Throughout these journeys, she acquires the unwavering conviction that we all have to get involved with aiding those in need, looking only ahead to what can alleviate their pain, without trying to find out who or what to blame for their situation.
In this book, where world History intertwines with the stories of singular human destinies, she tells all about her fight for those who are left behind: students that go hungry during the COVID pandemic, young families without income, small business owners in financial distress, children in rural Bolivia in dire need of a school, Palestinians showered with bombs and lacking medical aid, starving fishermen in Indonesia who have lost all their equipments in the tsunami… With the support of the French Secours Populaire, she successfully mobilizes the media and donors all over the planet, always working towards practical solutions that have a real impact.
This book is at the same time a report on the harrowing living conditions of the poorest in our societies, a guide to getting involved and efficiently help others in need, and the proof that everyone has the power to make a difference improving the lives of our fellow human beings.
