Luna Ritter leads a rather ordinary life, stretched between her veterinary practice, her partner and their daily arguments about whether to have a baby. But this all changes when she has a life-threatening accident and discovers something extraordinary: she feels no sense of fear. After meeting with a neurologist, she gets her diagnosis: she suffers from a rare medical disease called Urbach-Wiethe Syndrome. Whilst an advantage at first glance, the condition poses a huge risk for Luna and her loved ones; is it really beneficial to be totally fearless? Meanwhile, a murder investigation is taking place. The police believe they have not only their suspects, but a motive too.
After the accident, Luna enlists the help of Kalon Kane, a renowned neurologist who specializes in her condition. After discovering the truth behind her partner’s Pulitzer Prize, Kane proposes to conduct a series of tests on Luna in his lab. Persuaded by her undeniable attraction towards him, Luna accepts the offer. But when she arrives at the lab and meets another patient suffering from the same illness, she begins to question whether Doctor Kane really has her best intentions at heart.
A firmly established French writer, Frédéric Lepage sets this psychological thriller in the fast-paced city of New York. However, the characters and sentiment of Lepage’s novel remains quintessentially French, combining elements of crime and mystery with twists and turns at every page. Even against the bright lights of New York City, Lepage’s novel shines out as a prime example of French thriller writing, leaving his audience questioning what it really means to be filled with fear. Winner of the Prix Cognac 2021, the novel certainly does not disappoint, but instead makes us question the forces at play, both in our own brains and in the underhand world of New York. No one and nothing are to be trusted.
