For the first time, an in-depth look at France’s General Directorate for External Security (DGSE) that takes us behind the scenes of the famous Bureau.

In charge of external intelligence for France, the DGSE, or France’s "special services" as it is sometimes called, was created in 1982 right before the Rainbow Warrior scandal, but much has changed since then. They are "special," in their unique specificity: on the orders of the President of the Republic, their actions are clandestine. Meaning that France cannot claim responsibility for them and their actions are carried out unbeknownst to the whole planet, without any uniforms or marks of affiliation.

From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the election of Donald Trump, the list of its absences is striking and goes way back. Now, in Libya, the situation is still unclear. France couldn’t choose a side and now has two irons in the fire: the DGSE’s Action Division is fighting alongside Egypt and the Emirates with the dissident Haftar, while the diplomats of Quai d’Orsay claim to support the recognized government of Fayez el-Sarraj…
