Strolling along the canals of the city – Georgette loves her houseboats – they suddenly spot a fisherman in curious attire and start chatting with him. Thinking that a fish has bitten, the man pulls out his line and finds at its end not a fish but the severed foot of a little girl dressed in a sock and a golden slipper. Magritte contacts his friend in the police to know if any young girls have disappeared recently, but none has been signaled as missing. “A golden shoe”, says Georgette to herself, “is a bizarre things to wear for a little girl. Unless she had been disguised as a princess.”
In the course of their inquiry, the couple is plunged into the world of the circus where they come about a dwarf worrying for his wife, who is of little stature too and has been missing without a trace. Thus starts a game of smoke and mirrors resembling the layering of perspectives in Magritte’s famous paintings. Could the killer be among Magritte’s own friends and admirers?
