The book
Amidst the preparations for the Nativity feast in the year 1360, France awaits the return of her king Jean II, called “the Good”, after 4 years of captivity at the hands of the English.
The king had been made prisoner in the battle of Poitiers in 1356, a battle that the French should never have lost since they outnumbered the English forces by far. During the absence of the king, his eldest son, Charles, a carefree and easily swayable youth, has been in charge of the kingdom. The young prince had to face his ambitious cousin, Charles II of Navarre called “the Bad”, who wanted the throne of France for himself, as well as the provost of the Paris merchants, Étienne Marcel, who tried to weaken the power of royalty itself.
But these trials have changed and shaped the inconsequential youth into a leader, who has finally succeeded in gathering the large ransom demanded by Edward III in exchange for his father’s freedom. A big part of the ransom will be paid by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the first duke of Milan, in exchange for the hand of King John’s daughter in marriage for his son. But first, this sum has to be transported from Milan to Paris, on a dangerous road through a kingdom plagued by free companies of plundering mercenaries. For Visconti, there is no other man for this task but Pietro da Sangallo, former condottiere and captain of the Florence militia, who will be travelling in the company of the city’s ambassador who is none other than the great poet Petrarch. Will treason and ambushes triumph or will the ransom arrive safely at its destination?

Key points
The latest coup of an already best-selling author, whose novels have already brought the Middle Ages back to life and popularity
“The Ransom of King John” will be followed by a second volume “The Assassins of Étienne Marcel” (scheduled for January 2023). Both novels form a sequel to the already popular diptych “The Archpriest” and “The City of Tours” which will be published in a new edition this year. All four novels will form the saga “Tales from the Age of Charles V”.
