Welcome to the “Caravan”! It’s not a loony bin, but rather a private mansion where a little community of nutty humans lives together. James the cat sees and hears all. And he is very busy looking after each one of them…

On Rue Lafayette, all the way at the back of an enclosed garden is a charming, but slightly worn down private mansion that its inhabitants have lovingly named “the Caravan.” Annette Rahbani, an elderly woman in a wheelchair, and her husband Maurice are the house’s happy owners. They host a handful of scatterbrained residents: a retiree with no money, an actress whose career has stagnated, a young painter and amateur poker player, an Afghani woman with no papers, and a mysterious Lebanese man who pays a substantial rent without any objections. The latest arrival, a young Israeli woman named Talia, has moved in with a very specific goal. Annette is the daughter of the man who denounced her family to the Germans, ultimately sending them to the death camps in order to more easily appropriate their possessions. When Talia reveals to Annette the crimes her father committed, the old woman is overwhelmed by the news and decides to give Talia the deed to the “Caravan”—a decision throws the whole community into complete chaos. Bickering and insults ensue, then some attempt suicide and even kill each other, calling for the intervention of a charming police inspector, for whom Talia, to further complicate the situation, falls head over heals. James, the mansion cat, does not lose a single morsel of this darkly comical, dramatic, and extravagant cascade of events, which he narrates with relish.
