Paris, present day. While the climate is spiraling out of control and petrol shortages are multiplying, social tensions are running high – yet everyone goes on with life as usual.
Alice, a radiologist going on forty, cheats boredom and cheats on her fiancé by regularly visiting a variety of dating sites.
Iris, a ninety year old woman with Alzheimer’s, tries to hide the severity of her affliction from her children. A former concert pianist, she hangs on to one single thought: taking her life before it will no longer belong to her.
After having returned from a stint in a squatted agricultural exploitation, Aurélien works as a delivery bike driver. Disillusioned with life in a commune along with rave parties and shallow revolutionary ramblings, he is now saving to buy a boat and to leave the shore behind.
These three characters have nothing in common but their growing feeling of solitude and an obstinate quest for freedom. Yet fate will intertwine their existences and guide every one of them to their destinations.
This contrapuntal novel is composed of three voices that embody three visions of a world in upheaval, oscillating between hate and hopelessness. In this three-voice fugue, Jennifer Murzeau analyzes the state of our present-day society and dissects the aspirations of the human heart through the stories of three authentic and relatable characters inhabited by the same inextinguishable desire for happiness.
