In Nimrod, a fantasy city organized by castes, the population is divided into five hierarchical orders: the Shadows, the Enlightened, the Bards, the Lightbearers, and the Luminaries. At first glance, this society seems to have reached the height of democracy. The citizens all contribute to the entire process of crafting laws that affect them, from their creation to voting for them. With the Great Night lasting half the year, the city uses Torches to protect themselves against the ghouls, wild animals who prowl outside the city. But the secret of the origin of fire, the energy around which all of the city’s life is organized, seems to be jealously guarded. Ham, a Lightbearer in charge of security issues for the city, is investigating a young man’s disappearance. The unexpected vanishing strangely coincides with the vandalism of the Torches and the appearance of a mysterious dissenting graffiti all over the city. Who is hiding behind these disruptions to public order? Between science fiction, crime thriller, and ecological-political speculation, this imaginative novel pulls us into an atemporal universe that subtly questions the faults and pretenses of democratic societies
