Paris, Place d’Italie. Candice Louradour, 28, witnesses an accident: a woman is run over by a reckless driver before her very eyes.
Instinctively, Candice goes to her aid and decides to accompany her to the hospital. Seriously injured, the older woman, Dominque Marquisan is without a family.
These two women with thirty years between them and seemingly so different nevertheless enjoy getting to know each other and helping each other out. Dominique isn’t shy in sharing her passion for Zola and in revealing her special relationship with the author. Meanwhile, Candice confides in Dominique about her late father and the heavy secrets he left behind.
They become inseparable from each other, but this closeness cannot last…Is Dominique who has, little by little, become entwined in Candice’s daily life, as sweet as she seems? Is she taking advantage of Candice, the single mother under the grip of an evil which is eating away at her? Will Candice be able to face the truth?
In this novel which is a true portrait of the human soul, Tatiana de Rosnay intertwines destinies, the past and the present in order to bring about a time of peace: the time when internal wounds will finally heal.

Key points:
The character of Candice, the brave, big-hearted mother who has had a rough go of it, is particularly endearing, while Dominique's character is intriguing yet worrying.
The past and the present echo each other and shed light on each other. Candice thus finds in Zola's life answers to her inner and family tensions. Moreover, everything about Zola is never gratuitous or didactic.
Although the novel has drawers, all the plots are intrinsically linked: the construction and the suspense are thus perfectly maintained.
All the author's themes are present: the imprint of places, the memory of walls, family secrets.
