In a passage from Lost Illusions, Lucien de Rubempré receives this prophecy: You are capable of becoming a great writer, but you will never become anything more than a little trickster. Nothing has changed since the 19th century. Whatever century you are in, the same characters appear. Meet Paul Beuvron. He also aspires to be a first rate author. But can he only dream of this?
The Little Tricksters tells the humorous yet melancholy tale of the ambitious and slightly too romantic young boy from the provinces who hopes to win over Paris. It is a story of friendship, the highs and the lows. The narrator, Henri, meets Paul in 2003 at a literary course in Rueil-Malmaison, at the edge of a woods. In the evening, when they come back after class, they imagine their extravagant futures. But then the years go by. A journalist, Henry discovers the nasty ways of the press and publishing. More innocent, Paul publishes his first novel – which is a flop. But despite it all he still has a gift for parody. An elderly editor, full of underhand tricks, suggests that he should write his next bestsellers discretely - but there is a fine line between spreading your wings and selling your soul. Is this the beginning of a vicious circle for Paul, where he will have to deal with jokers and tricksters along the way? It turns out, you can write love manuals and still fall into the spleen. Yet, at the heart of vaudeville Paris, love still remains. Or is even that an illusion…
