The most famous and least known of Napoleon’s three sisters.
What the collective memory recalls of Pauline Bonaparte is the
perfection of her naked body as sculpted by Canova, and her

What the collective memory recalls of Pauline Bonaparte is the
perfection of her naked body as sculpted by Canova, and her
supposedly countless lovers. This book explores Pauline's life
beyond the speculation and fantasies, while it scrolls through
the imperial epic as seen through her eyes. Unlike her siblings,
Napoleon's closest and most beloved sister never reigned.
Her stunning beauty, recognized by both her enemies and her
admirers, did not bring her happiness.
Her first marriage to General Leclerc could have been happy. But in
Santo Domingo, where they were sent to pacify the colony, Leclerc
died of yellow fever. Her second marriage to Prince Borghese
brought her no consolation. They lived in Rome, then in Florence,
but the couple’s tenuous relationship was finally destroyed by the
death of little Dermide Leclerc, Pauline’s only child. Wanting to be
everywhere but not happy anywhere, suffering from a thousand
ills, Pauline separated from her husband. She then traveled
around the French Empire, most of the time bedridden, trying
cures of all kinds that brought no improvement, looking in vain for
perfect love among several lovers. When the Empire collapsed,
she was the only sibling to share her brother’s exile on the island
of Elba. After Waterloo, she went to live in Rome again and gave
a few parties, but the death of the Emperor was the last blow to
her health. Reconciled in her final days with Prince Borghese, she
died in Florence in the palace he had placed at her disposal. One
cannot imagine the splendor of the Empire without this sublime
princess. A romantic before her time, she concealed behind her
caprices an incurable melancholy.
