On March 7, 2021, 7 men and 7 women entered Lombrives cave in Ariège, southwestern France, to stay underground for 40 days without any access to time references—no sun and no clocks. Isolated in this splendid, yet completely new world, they will pursue unique research into the human brain’s capacity to comprehend time and its ability to create a new functional synchronization that allows a group to live as one, in a system with no time and extreme conditions. How will they agree to meet for work? How will they live together when only their personal biological rhythms dictate periods of sleep and wakefulness? How will they adjust to these new life conditions at a constant temperature and humidity (12°C/53°F and 95%) in a nocturnal world full of splendid sights ? These are just some of the questions that allow them to reflect on what new ways of life might look like in the face of climate change or on other planets.
The book also tells the legend of Lombrives cave, created by Hercules when, having gone mad with grief after finding his lover to be dead, he buried her in this cave, and where the Cathars are thought to have hidden their treasures in medieval times.
