A revised edition recounting the extraordinary destiny of a beautiful, young half-American half- Hungarian countess known as “the White Rose of Hungary” who became Queen of Albania in 1938.
April 27th 1938. The young countess Geraldine Apponyi married the king of Albany, Zog I. While their marriage was a diplomatic arrangement, for the Muslim king and Catholic half-American it was love at first sight. The world fell under the spell of her beauty, and very quickly, she was adopted by the Albanian nation because she worked towards improving living conditions.
A year later, she gave birth to Prince Leka but the invasion of Albania by Mussolini’s forces two days later
turned the tide of history. For sixty years, Geraldine had to endure exile from the Communist regime yet she
never ceased to inspire the admiration of the Albanian people and its intellectuals.
Geraldine’s history is also that of the Balkan Peninsula. Dedet’s rich biography of this great woman is nourished by interviews with the Queen and her personal correspondence.
“An amazing biography. One of the most beautiful stories of the last century.”
Frédéric Mitterrand, “Les légendes du siècle”, Europe 1
“A brilliant lesson of courage.”
