Apparently the innocent and haphazard victim of a stray bullet, Mathilde discovers that family secrets can be fatally dangerous for those who might chance to reveal them.
At the funeral of her mother, an eminent nutritionist and author of health food books, Mathilde Morris meets her father's sister, Aunt Lorie, for the first time. This encounter represents a major disruption in Mathilde's ploddingly dull existence, one she decides to take advantage of by getting to know her weird aunt, an antique book collector. But on her way to their agreed meeting place, the young woman suddenly finds herself caught in the crossfire of what appears to be a gangland killing. Before she knows what is happening, she has become the target of a stray bullet. She gains consciousness only to discover a partial loss of memory. She tries to push back the veil of amnesia, prodded and aided by Inspector Pluchet, Aunt Lorie, and Ahmed, a philosopher-grocer. All three of them harbour doubts as to the accidental nature of her wound. Is Mathilde really the unlucky recipient of a bullet gone astray? And who could possibly profit from her convenient amnesia?
Judge of the Tribunal de grande instance of Lisieux, Sophie Endelys has also been a judge of the Paris courts. This is her second novel.
