April 12th 1961, USSR. Yuri Gagarin is making history by becoming the first man successfully travelling into space. How did he get there?
Nothing had predestined young Yuri for such a feat. Born into a family of peasants, he knows all about the hard life, never complaining and, above all, fearing nothing and no one. During his apprenticeship as a foundryman, Yuri simultaneously trains as a Soviet air cadet at the local flying club, eventually enrolling in the Higher Air Force Pilot School. Destiny in the making.
During this time, in the US, Marina Socovna is spying on the enemy’s organizations. After Stalin’s death, Khrushchev entrusts her with the overhaul of the Soviet state apparatus.  The USSR are in need of an idol to inspire the masses – and what better symbol is there than the conquest of space to instill dreams of emancipation and freedom?
Thus Khrushchev, Marina, rocket engineer Korolev and Gagarin enter the race for the stars. While the smiling face of the cosmonaut is the best propaganda imaginable, becoming the Soviet poster boy is not without consequences for the man behind the myth. Will Gagarin always stay a hero or are there cracks appearing behind the surface?
