Sébastien de Noilat, an herbalist, has travelled to Paris hoping to meet a famous botanist he wants to share his latest findings with. Upon arriving, he gets acquainted with another botanist, Charles Petit, and spends an evening with him and his friends, the austere Alexandre and the young Gaspard. The next morning, Gaspard is found dead and Charles, who had been sleeping next to the victim, is charged with his murder by the investigating officer Parisot.
Determined to help his new friend, Sébastien tells the investigators about Alexandre’s suspicious absence in the night of the murder, yet the latter is quickly cleared of all suspicions. In the meantime, several corpses are being discovered, day after day, all of them exhibiting wounds resembling those described in the public surgical lessons at the King’s Gardens delivered by the famous surgeon Dionis. Who will be able to arrest this killer who puts into practice the subject of the surgical lessons only hours after their taking place?
