“Always down, never up” is the motto of the Country that points
downhill, a never ending mountain which its inhabitants, the
Verticals, have been trying to descend over generations in the
hope of one day reaching the promised land, the Flat Country,
located in the Deep Deep Down. In some villages, the slope is so
angled that its dwellers must constantly live tied to ropes. This,
however, is not the case for the village of Ten Houses (And Not A
Single One More) where Li lives with her adoptive parents. Nevertheless, life here is not easy. Wild beasts roam, the cold and
the snow are deadly and the deeply injust system means that the
important ‘descendants’ are separated from the others, condemned to a life of hopelessly trying to descend the mountain. Li belongs to this latter category, with her blonde hair and blue eyes she stands out, not to mention the fact that she was found abandoned as an infant. She is no-one’s descendant. Yet when the young girls catches a glimpse of the gloomy future that lies ahead of her, she decides to leave with five other young people from the village. This marks the start of a danger-filled saga, revealing to Li the secrets of her origins which are closely linked to the secrets of The Country that Points Downhill.
