Reconciling these two roles is complex, even if for many working is not only financially essential, but also provides a form of welcome respite. The question is also tied into other social struggles: the majority of carers are women and so the inequalities add up. All are subjected to these injunctions: the need to be constantly present, to be productive, patient, reassuring and to endure the advice-giving; “leave your family problems at the doorstep!” or other falsely sympathetic messages from well-wishers.
The book is written in 3 parts. The first, to help carers get through the ordeal. How to identify, avoid, or get out of an exhausted state for those already in one. How to manage stress and the feeling of guilt. How to incorporate the smallest acts into everyday life which gives power and energy.
Next, we discuss work. Readers will discover all the skills they have learned and developed whilst being a carer. How can we put them to use? Who is the best person to talk about what they have experienced? The pages of this book aim to restore confidence in the work that carers deserve. Finally, we will discuss changing protocol. Speaking, convincing, direction by direction, election after election. We will uncover the arguments demonstrating not only the importance, but also the interest that employers should have in supporting their workers who are carers and policies to transform the way the world of work deals with carers
