It casts new light on a widely discussed topic, capitalism, by using an original combination of economic, social, and business history with economic sociology. This dialogue between different approaches makes it possible to revisit and provide new insights into the classic theses of Marx, Weber and Braudel. The book offers a new overarching narrative that distinguishes between three major epochs, from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries: the ages of commerce, factories and finance. Yet it is anchored in case studies; the actors in the narrative are accurately situated social groups rather than abstract aggregates. The topics discussed in the book include the "Great Divergence", consumer movements, the segmentation of workplaces, the organization of firms, conflicts between shareholders and managers, financial crises, the religion and social capital of capitalists, and the role of law and the State in the shaping of capitalism.
