Through the eyes of a young woman returning to her village, a powerful and disturbing portrait of Africa. Having left to study in France, Ayané returns to her native village in Africa to visit her mother, who is ill. There she finds a desolate place, deserted by the men who have left to find work, where the women, children, and old people live on the margins of society, in poverty and tedium, in a country ravaged by civil war. One evening, militiamen invade the village, in search of boys to fill the ranks of their army and girls to service it. They claim to be restoring unity to the African people, giving them back their soul. They make preparations for a ceremony in which they will compel the villagers to commit a dreadful transgression. A long night is in store for them all…. In this compelling first novel, the author has achieved a powerful portrait of the despair and complexity of Africa, with its codes, its rites, its beliefs, and its demons. “A new African voice is born.” Livres Hebdo, 24 June 2005
