At the death of Louis XIV, France is on the brink of ruin and consumed with plots for the succession. Frédéric, painter and free-lance hit man, finds himself involved in one that threatens to cost him his life.
Louis XIV has just died, leaving France bankrupt and in the throes of intrigues over the succession. When the regent, Philippe d'Orléans, takes the throne, a breeze of freedom?some say debauchery?sweeps through the country. Occultism, pursuit of the paranormal, and black masses constitute the norm for the roués in red heels who invoke the Devil in secret ceremonies in the quarries at Vanves. It is an era of the worst excesses and aberrations. Frédéric Lemât is an artist whose work is quite popular in Parisian salons. He is also a hit man in his spare time, but a rather sympathetic character as the genre goes, since his task is usually to relieve young marquises of the dirty old men to whom their families have sold them off. Frédéric uses his knowledge of chemistry to transform his paintings into mortal traps. Beneath his brush, the image of a doe frolicking in a clearing becomes a weapon for crime.
And then, all of a sudden, the hunter becomes game! Who is out to put an end to Frédéric? Moreover, who is this mysterious painter, Ikônos, whom no one has ever actually seen and whose paintings are said to be prophetic? So prophetic, in fact, that they might shake the foundations of the monarchy in presaging the Revolution. For the Wolf Hunters of the King, a group of noble fanatics, these impious canvases must rapidly be destroyed, and their author with them!
The reluctant Frédéric finds himself mixed up in a plot beyond his comprehension, one that may cost him his life.
