The Cannes Film Festival… from the other side of the projectors
“There are the stars, the films, the events, the awards. There is the feeling

“There are the stars, the films, the events, the awards. There is the feeling
in the air. In this Lover’s Dictionary, I present personal, artistic, real and
fantasized portraits of the stars who left me, well, star-struck. There are the
directors, from around the world, from the least to the most well-known.
The countries, styles, schools, genres. The press. The photos. The juries, the
discussions, the laughter and the tears, too. The parties, surprises, scandals
and controversies, the eccentricities.
There are the festival-goers, that whole mysterious world of the movies
that ordinary people dream of and everyone wants to get close to and be
a part of.
This Lover’s Dictionary tells the tale of the festival through tableaux,
evocations, scenes I witnessed with my own eyes, as though they were
describing a future that is already here, and now. For 14 years as a journalist,
then 38, first as director and then as president, I was an eyewitness with
full access to everything that made the Festival such a great adventure,
including the inaccessible legends behind the scenes.
Over the course of this highly personal choice of entries, readers will help
select the films, judge them, direct them and star in them. They can relive
the Festival’s wildest years from the inside. If this dictionary appeals – as I
hope it will – to both film buffs and those who are simply curious, it’s because
it will allow them to see how the “Cannes machine” – that incredible circus
whose organization makes festival-directors around the world drool with
envy – run, from behind the scenes.
To make it an enjoyable read, whether you flip through it or read it from
start to finish, I aimed for balance between portraits of specific individuals
and entries on more general topics. This dictionary could have been called,
“How life turns into history.” I may switch back and forth between a literary
style and a chattier one, but the mood is always upbeat. I write as a historian,
a novelist, a diarist and a commentator, all rolled into one.
Follow the guide!”
