Having retired to a remote hut with only herself for company, Blanche de Richemont embarks on an inner journey which stage by stage brings her closer to what courage is and the extra insight that it can afford us.

The purpose of my quest was to answer the following question: how do you sustain – and reawaken – your courage in a world that is running out of steam? How do you keep the flame alive?
My stay in the hut became a metaphor for the pathway to courage. In this sense, my book is the story of an adventure.’
There are three key periods in this quest.
Enthusiasm, tinged with a certain foolhardiness. The joy of responding to a call. An immersion in the sources of courage and ardour.
Difficulty. Discouragement, fragility, doubt.
A trace of courage. Its resonance and what it sows. And the discovery that having courage, whatever form it may take, affords us additional insight into ourselves and the world.
At each of these stages, Blanche de Richemont recalls the men and women she has met during her investigations and references the key authors who have fed into her thinking. ‘These encounters and texts resonate with what I’m experiencing, feeling and going through. They represent one further step towards understanding courage and thereby casting light on our own existences.’
