That’s what they said to Alia Bengana, a Franco-Algerian architect, when she was dispatched to an oasis in the Sahara to build a guest house. Anywhere else, the comment would have brought a smile to the face of this huge fan of reinforced concrete.

But when she saw the legions of trucks transporting the sand needed to make the concrete over a distance of some 1,200 kilometres, she
began to wonder if architects and the people working in the building trade needed their heads examining…

A few years later, near their Swiss chalet where they are locked down with their two children, Alia and Claude come across a strange machine.

A drilling rig! Are they looking for sand in the region? A little incident that brings the subject back to the forefront of our architect’s mind and prompts her to question once again her favourite material. With the support of her globetrotting husband Claude and a friend who is the editor in chief of a Swiss magazine, Alia takes the plunge into the murky, dog-eat-dog world of concrete…
