He was a young Greek revolutionary resistant receiving death threats from the Stalinists when he arrived in France, at a time when France's infatuation with the USSR was at its zenith. He then contributed to creating, along with Claude Lefort and Jean-François Lyotard, one of the hardiest branches of the radical left, "Socialisme ou Barbarie," which later became a mythic journal and one of the greatest influences on May '68, notably for its leftist critique of regimes that called themselves Communist.
