The novel is a compilation of "after-love" letters written by Louise to Clément, the man who broke her heart when he left her for another woman. A year after the breakup, Louise still suffers from the heartbreak and in an attempt to put distance between herself and her memories, she travels to destinations like Cuba, New York, and Venice, writing letters along the way. Though Clément never responds she comes to realize that the act of writing is sufficient, that opening herself up to her anger, grief, and incomprehension allows her to break the ties that bind her to the idealized version of Clément
Philippe Besson has published with Julliard Son Frère, which was adapted for the cinema by director Patrice Chéreau, Un garçon d'Italie, Les jours fragiles and Un instant d'abandon , which are currently being adapted for the big screen, and L'Arrière-saison (grand prize, RTL-Lire), which is being adapted for the stage.
