“I have loved Brazil for a long time, and I still love it. I've been spending time here for sixty years. I go to see it, I talk with it. We exchange ideas, memories, mischief. It tells me stories….”
“I have known Brazil for sixty years, to the day. It has always amazed and surprised me, sometimes irritated me, but never disappointed me. This dictionary seeks to provide a view of its forests, at the beginning of things, its El Dorados, its parched deserts of the northeast, the kindness and cruelties of its inhabitants, the sensuousness of Rio, of Brasilia, Bahia and Sao Luis, the festivals and the sambas, the fascinating fish of the Amazon, the adventure of rubber, coffee, and this scarlet wood called “Brazil wood”. As I spend time here regularly, I have painted it with my own memories. I offer images of it. I recall its scents and its storms. I draw portraits of a little black girl, a man of the forest, or one who has hallucinations of God. At the same time, I review its history, of which we know only bits and pieces in Europe, and which has been brutal and sumptuous. And I tell of present day Brazil, divided between the horror of the favelas and the impatience of a people who, perhaps for the first time, and in part thanks to Lula, realize that they are in charge of their own future. This is what it is to be in love with a country.” ? Gilles Lapouge
