Ho is a child who always loved to run along the riverbank, wanting to be as fast as the wind. One day after being sent away by his parents to work on a plantation, his run is cut short when his foot falls on a landmine; he loses an arm and both legs in the tragic accident. This beautifully written novel about the harrowing life of a child is a cruel tale, which, however, teaches a beautiful lesson about life. Ho's vital energy and courage demand respect. The book goes beyond Ho's story and denounces the atrocities to which children are victims all over the world. Children that are soldiers, beggars, prostitutes, exploited, mutilated, exposed to radiation...this short, powerful text confronts us with our societies' most basic misdeeds when it comes to children. And its message of hope teaches that the purity of a child's heart is still stronger than the machinations of man.
