Kongo, 1685. The kingdom is no more than a land of destruction
under Portuguese occupation. Like its capital, Sao Salvador,
which lost its splendour many years ago.
Meanwhile, a little girl with eyes like the moon is born in the
clear waters of the Mpozo river, whilst her twin sister emerges
from her mother’s womb without a breath of life. The older
daughter is given the name Kimpa Vita, the twin born out of war.
And this inaugural battle of existence will decider her destiny.
From the test of the difficulties, to the rebuilding of Sao Salvador
and even the student uprising at the Jesuits, Kimpa becomes an
emblem of resistance for the oppressed. For some, she
represents the hope of a better future. For others, she becomes
Dona Béatrice, the virgin saint able to communicate with an
invisible world. Whilst her conspirators are plotting to take her
down with the help of a witch…
This is how she becomes a figure just as loved as she is hated by
all - by the greedy, power-hungry individuals, by the religious
order, by the Portuguese invaders and especially by the Bakongo
people. However, Kimpa chooses love over hate, which leads to
her unhappy fate.
Inspired by a real story, The Queen with eyes like the moon
combines magical realism with history to paint a singular
portrait of this sacrificed woman – the African Joan of Arc.
